PICKING ASPHODELS
The asphodel is a very common naturally-growing plant in Sardinia. It is picked in March and April, when the plant starts to bloom.
This is in fact the period when the asphodel is pliable but not too soft.
Women and girls are usually responsible for picking, just as they are for weaving: they start work at dawn and on one day can pick 40 bundles of plants.
Picking s’iscraria was permitted by all landowners free of charge, a practice that continues today.
