THE RITES

The most important rite takes place on Holy Monday, Lu Lunnisanti in Sardinian. It is a sacred celebration that lasts the whole day and consists of four different phases.
The first phase starts at sunrise in the country Basilica of Santa Maria di Tergu, which is about 8 km from Castelsardo. The first mass is said and the Mysteries are presented. Then a long procession from the Basilica makes its way to the bastion of Castello, and returns to the Basilica.
Around midday, the faithful, who by this time have grown to a crowd, banquet in the countryside that surrounds the Basilica. The lively atmosphere of this country festival is enjoyed by all.

In the middle of the afternoon people go back to Castelsardo. At sunset, from the lowest part of the village, a procession winds its way up through the beautiful historical Medieval town center. The streets are lit only by oil lamps. The twilight, the clothes worn by the brothers of the Confraternity and the polyphonic hymns, combine to create a very evocative atmosphere.
After returning to the church of Santa Maria di Tergu, the poignant melodies of the singers result in a crescendo of emotions.
