Home E COUNTRIES>DORGALI

Dorgali is one of the greatest centers of the province of Nuoro.

The economy is above all based on the handicraft (manifacture of the skin and the leather, the ceramics, the gold and silver, the carpets, the clothes), on the industry of the foods (wine, bread, cakies, milk and cheeses, oil, honey).  The tourist field is in full expansion and above all concentrates its activity in the summery season: hotels, camping, farm holidays, pizzerie.

Dorgali is joined with “Cala Gonone”,an urban part that was born from second houses and became, thanks to the summery tourism, a true country.

province:  Nuoro
subregion:  between Baronie and Barbagia
inhabitants:  8,200
extension:  23481 has
altitude:  456 m
geographic position:  the country leaned to the Bàrdia mount (882 m, limestone), it is far from Nuoro approximately 30 kilometers and seven from the coast of the Gulf of Orosei.

the city landscape:

Dorgali, cut in two parts by “La Marmora” street, maintains  the aspect of many city centers of the province of Nuoro, keeping an original central nucleus that in the course of the years has spread with moderner constructions.

The shops and the storees of handicraft are concentrated in the central way and in the narrow adjacent alleys.

The most ancient houses are built with the stone at sight but  many are by now crumbling and deserted; some of these, exceeded the large main door of the entrance, have still got  an inner courtyard. In the center of the country there is the Church of Caterina Saint of  nineteenth-century style in whose inside it is possible to see a wooden altar that goes back to the XIII century.

Beautiful is the Church of the Carmelo,  situated in the homonymous hill at the periphery of the city: it is remarkable the panorama.

natural atmosphere:

The economic resources of Dorgali are closely tied to its fortunate geographic position:  it is divided between sea and mountain.

Exceeded the ring-road of the country and arrived to the tunnel that goes to Cala Gonone,  it can be chosen to enter and to come down towards the sea, or not to enter in it and  to go on towards the”Sardinian Oriental” road.  This last choice reserves marked and visible panoramic points, giving the possibility to enjoy some zones of the Supramonte of Dorgali.

The natural beauties of this area count holm-oak, junipers, some endemisms, predatories, gorges, canyon and dolinas.

In order to see and to observe some of these wonders it is necessary a guide.

In the neighbourhood of the country there is the cove of Ispinigoli that keeps inside the highest stalagmite of Europe with 38 meters;  in the Punic age the stalagmite was used to make human sacrifices and in fact it is called also ” Abyss of the virgins “.

Exceeded the tunnel that goes to “Cala Gonone”  there is the sea of the Gulf of Orosei.  The road that leads to “Cala Gonone” is much meandering, but it is at the same time short and really panoramic. To the sides of the road you can see the forests and, after little curves, it rises the curtain on the sea.

Numerous beaches and little beaches and encircle “Cala Gonone”; some of these were born artificially only since little years ago.

To the south, after very few kilometers of panoramic road, it meets the beach of “Cala Fuili”.

From “Cala Gonone” it can be leave for a moving turn by boat along the rocky coasts in the Gulf of Orosei to

discover beautiful places such as”Cala Luna” and the Coves of the Marine Ox, that are so called because they were the house of the nun seal until to fifty years ago.
