PRANU MUTTEDDU
Neolithic necropolis and menhir
What: lines of menhir
Province: Cagliari
Subregion: Gerrei
Municipality: Goni
Place: Pranu Mutteddu
This area is a large necropolis which was built by the men of the Cultura di Ozieri (3500-2700 B. C). This was the most important civilization of the Sardinian Neolithic period.
Near the numerous tombs there are the lines of menhir, huge rocks stuck vertically in the ground. There are about 60 stones which are grouped together or set out in lines. They were carefully carved and on their frontal facade they often have designs which are similar to human features (protohuman menhir).
They are said to be the earliest examples of statues in Sardinia.
