  • What: tonnare (villages that people inhabited during the tuna season) and tuna-processing factories.
  • Province: Cagliari
  • Subregion: Sulcis
  • Municipality: Carloforte
  • Place: Isola Piana/La Punta

Description:
The Tonnara in Isola Piana dates back to 1698: in 1964 the village was abandoned and the tuna-processing factory has long since been transformed into an elegant summer resort.

The other facilities are in the La Punta area, where you can visit several fish-processing factories and the tonnare: one is abandoned, while the other one is intact, and can be seen by asking the owner’s permission.
The traditional tonnara has declined, because of the decrease in the number of fish, which are nowadays caught in the open sea, thus preventing them from laying eggs along the coast.
