POINTS OF INTEREST

  • Some local researchers claim that the meaning of the name “s’urthu”, the costume from Fonni, is not “bear” (there are no bears in Sardinian) but exactly the opposite of “iscurthu” (barefoot and in a figurative sense naked). So its meaning, leaving out the negative particle “isc”-, is “covered”.
  • In the taverns of Gavoi they still call the drums by the name of the unlucky dog which has generously supplied his skin to make the drums.
